- This Friday (February 17) practice goes ahead as usual
- Next week there is no school (and no practice) on Monday (February 20). We will have a makeup practice for those who can make it the evening of Wednesday, February 22 and our normal practice time on Friday, February 24.
- Monday, February 27 is the last practice before states and it is important that those going to states be there, since it is our chance to prepare as a group for the tournaments.
- The "elementary" (6th grade) tournament is March 1-3. Since most of the coaches and games will be in Grand Rapids, there is no practice on Friday, March 3.
- Monday, March 6 the 6th graders get the practice day off after a busy tournament: the March 6 practice is for Middles (7th/8th grade) only.
- The "middle" (7th/8th grade) tournament is March 8-10, so for the same reason as above there is no practice on Friday, March 10.

Practice Time Changes: State Tournament Ahead
The Clague team is looking forward to the State Tournaments happening in Grand Rapids in March. Due to those tournaments and the school calendar there are a few changes for the weeks ahead.

Almost Time For Academic Games Again
Now that most Clague students have received their schedules, don't forget to add Academic Games as well.
With the Clague bell schedule shifting a bit, we will start out with practice on Friday after school until 5:00, and as per usual, from 7:00-9:00 on Mondays. We will once again be practicing in the Clague cafeteria.
The first practice for players returning from last year's Clague team will be Friday, September 9, after school.
On Monday, September 12, we will have a full practice for everyone -- returning Clague players, players who played AG last year and are at Clague now, and Clague students who have never played Academic Games before but are thinking about joining. Parents are welcome too. Hope to see you there!

Practices now on Mondays only
With a great year of practice Friday tournaments, Saturday Tournaments, Super Tournaments, and a National Tournament behind us, we will not be practicing as a team on Fridays for the rest of the school year, but we are still meeting Mondays at 7 as usual, because as President Taft would say, "It's time to start studying me again".

Clague Practices During State Tournament Season
As you're reading this blog, you probably know the State Tournaments are almost here. Clague sixth graders (the "elementary" teams) will be competing in Grand Rapids March 2-4 and the seventh and eighth graders (the "middle" teams) will be competing in the same place March 9-11. This is a great time of year for Academic Games but means that our practice schedule is of course changed:
- The remaining February practices (Friday the 26th and Monday the 29th) proceed at their normal times.
- Due to the state tournaments, there will be no practices Friday March 4 or Friday March 11.
- Monday March 7 is a practice for the middle teams only -- 6th graders do not have practice that night.
- The whole team will be back together and back to our usual schedule starting on Monday, March 14.

Clague AG 2014-15
Welcome Back,
I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful summer vacation. Academic Games begins for all interested students begins this Friday Afternoon from 3-5 pm. Our practice schedule will remain the same this year as it was last year, Mondays 7-9 pm, and Fridays after school until 5pm.
Our first Saturday tournament will be September 27th at Clague. A complete schedule is posted to the right, and is included in the Welcome Letter that is also posted on the right. Please make sure to complete the registration form attached to the welcome letter and bring it with you to your first practice.
We are lucky this year to have two new additions to our coaching team:
Nick Wang is a former AG player from Clague and Huron who graduated in 2013 from Yale and came home to work for the UofM and coach AG. Last year he helped coach a very successful team at King to their best finish in school history.
Yuxuan Chen is a 2014 Skyline graduate in her first year at UofM, who also had a very successful AG career at Clague and in HS.
We look forward to working with both of them this year, and feel confident that their additions will make our team that much harder to beat this year!

Winter Break Status update
Hello All,
Hope everyone is having an enjoyable winter break. I wanted to provide a little status update. When practice resumes next week, we will begin preparations in earnest for the State tournament in March. I will email a letter later this week providing details for the tournament. The cost per student this year for the tournament will be $335. This includes registration, room, board, meals, and transportation to and from the tournament. We will have limited scholarship money available.
Some important dates coming up in early January:
Saturday January 11 - Saturday tournament
Monday January 13 - Linguishtik worksheets due. Presidents and Propaganda questions from 8th graders due.
Friday January 17 - State tournament money and health form due
Monday January 20 - No practice
Tuesday January 21 - Special practice, State tournament teams announced.
Please note we also have an Academic Games sponsored fun night coming up (more details coming really soon). This is our big fundraiser for the year, and we ask all Academic Games parents to volunteer at the Fun Night.
I will post some info detailing the Propaganda techniques we learned before break and some that we are going to learn right after break. I have also posted a set of Presidents worksheets on the right. No points will be awarded for these, but they are a very useful study tool. I would also recommend everyone take a look at AGLOA.org, the official national AG website. They have a section called online learning that has both Presidents and Propaganda quizzes.

AG in the the new year
Hello All,
We hope everyone had a peaceful holiday season and a happy new year.
A few important dates and bits of information for you:
January 12 - Tournament at Adler Elementary school in Southfield. Remember, students need to attend three saturday tournaments to be eligible for the State tournament.
January 18 - Academic Games Fun Night - Our biggest fundraiser of the year. All parents of students expecting to attend the State Tournament are expected to volunteer.
January 18 - State tournament money and preliminary paperwork due. The cost will be $325 per student. We will have scholarship money available. More information about this tournament is posted on the right under worksheets, as well as the health form that needs to be signed and returned with the money for the tournament.
February 9 - Tournament at Crockett Academy in Detroit.

Our first Saturday tournament will be September 29th at Detroit MacKenzie. A complete schedule is posted to the right, and is included in the Welcome Letter that is also posted on the right. Please make sure to complete the registration form attached to the welcome letter and bring it with you to your first practice.
We would like to start something a little different this year. As many of you can attest to, as our children get older and add more and more activities, the time and energy we parents once had for oiur non-work related pursuits gets ever smaller. For the last few years that has been happening for me, as my son gets older (he's in 5th grade now) and more involved with travel soccer, AG, swimming, etc., the amount of time that I can dedicate to AG related preperation has gotten slimmer. For the last few year we as a team have been really lucky to have Vivek Thanabal with us to help be a mentor for our team and to relieve me of some of the coaching burdens during practice times and at tournaments.
This year, however, we will likely not have Vivek around at practices much. Although he is still in the UofM engineering school, his workload has increased as he prepares to graduate this year and move on to the next level of education. While we will still see him from time to time, we have made it clear to him that we want him to put schoolwork first, and he should feel no obligation to attend any one particular practice this year.
To fill the rather large gap created by his absence, I would like to put a call out to all of our AG parents out there. As the wide range of talented students on our team suggests, we have a myriad of gifted parents among our AG group. And as the recent success of parent run teams at both King and at other schools throughout the league shows, one need not be a lifetime Academic Gamer in order to be a successful coach (or co-coach).

Things to do over break to get ready for States
Hello All,
Hope you are enjoying all of this snow we are getting. Go outside and have some fun!
When you get back in, we have some suggestions for things you can do to get ready for the State tournament next week (or in two weeks for the 6th graders):
-Print out the Presidents packet and begin to fill them out. If enough people print them out, we may go over the answers at practice next monday.
-Print out the Propaganda cheat sheet, and use it to review all of the techniques. We will post some propaganda questions later this week to test how well you studied.
-Do problems in the WFF packet (Basic Part 1 / Basic Part 2 / Regular). Check your answers in the answer key. We are going to play a basic and a regular WFF game here via the comments section in the next couple of posts, which anyone is welcome to join.
-Go back and study your On-Sets and Equations packets. Check your answers against the answer keys (On - Sets and Equations).
-Invite a friend over, or go over to a friend's house. Studying is more fun with friends. You can also play a shake or two if you have games at home.

We have a big addition to the team this year, as Vivek Thanabal will be joining us as a coach. A former AG player at Clague and Huron, Vivek is a freshman in the UofM engineering school. Vivek was quite successful as a player at Clague, having been part of a number of championship teams at the State and National levels. I know he is looking forward to the new challenges that coaching brings.

Snow Day!!!
Due to the snow day toady, there will be no Academic Games practice this afternoon. On-Sets worksheets that were due today can be turned in after the winter break. Additionally, I will post the Elementary and Middle Ling packets here over the weekend. Those will be due in mid to late January.
To tide you over, a round worth of propaganda examples from section A. Leave your answers in the comments. i will post the suggested answers there before the end of the weekend.

Halloween Friday Tournament
A somewhat smaller crew turned out for our Friday tournament on Halloween, many ready for trick-or-treating in their costumes. To reward those who attended, we gave a 2-point bonus to all those who were there. Team and Individual standings are listed below.

Exponents, Roots & Captains
Monday's practice included a review of basic exponent rules for sixth graders (worksheet) and a lesson on how to deal with negative and fractional exponents for 7th and 8th graders (worksheet). It should be noted that students in the Elementary Division (6th grade and below) are not allowed to use negative or fractional roots or exponents. Additionally the sixth graders played a practice round, learned about team scoring and began to learn variations.
After practice this year's team captains were announced. Congratulations to 8th graders Valerie, Wendy, Graham, Jiaao, and Patrick. The Friday tournament teams will be revealed on Friday, and the students will pick names for their teams.
Finally, we will have no practice next Monday, September 22. We will have practice as regularly scheduled on Friday, and have our first tournament on Saturday the 27th at Tappan.

First Practice
Over 60 kids showed up Friday afterschool for the first full practice of the Academic Games year. Every new student was paired off with a returning student or two who taught them the basic rules of Equations. After the students had played a few shakes in their little groups they were given a little worksheet designed to see how well the older kids did in teaching them the rules of the games. The new students then went over the worksheet as a group. We ended practice by gathering all of the students together and talking about the plan for the year, and answering students' questions about the Friday, Saturday, and State tournaments. Finally, the returning players stayed behind after the sixth graders were dismissed and voted for this years team captains. The five captains will be announced at Monday's practice.
