Equations Worksheets

Equations worksheets are linked on the right. There is a packet for Elementary players (6th graders) and one for Middle players (7th and 8th grade).  We will not be printing out copies, so it is up to each student to print them out on their own. Worksheets are due before Thanksgiving break.

For every page completed, students will get one point added to their Friday tournament score, regardless of the number of problems they get correct. The idea is to reward effort. Students are encouraged to bring their worksheet packet with them to all practices, as we will often have times when they can work on them with other students.

6th and 7th grade students can get a maximum of 20 points from the worksheets, while returning 8th grade students can only get points for the worksheets that have not been in previous years' packets (pages 9G, 9H, 9I, 9J, 9K, 9L, 9M, 9N, 9O)

Variations in Equations

So far this year in practice we have been working on Equations and Presidents.  For (Adventurous) Equations, after the cubes are rolled three Variations are chosen which affect how Goals and Solutions are composed.

These variations are different for Elementary (5th/6th grade) and Middle (7th/8th grade) and the list varies from year to year, so just about everyone on the team has new variations to learn each year.

We have now introduced all the variations (except "Multiple of k" for the Middles) and will be using them in our Friday tournaments right away.

You might want your own copy of the variation sheets, in which case have a look at the Michigan League of Academic Games website where you can find many useful items including the Elementary Variations Sheet and the Middle Variations Sheet.

On-Sets worksheets and Eqs Answer Key

The On-Sets worksheets are posted on the right.  They are due before winter break (12/21 is our last practice).  All students can get up to ten points for completion of worksheets.  Also posted is the answer key for the Equations worksheets that the students have already completed and turned in.
Linguishtik worksheets (due in January) will be posted soon.

Equations State Champs!!!

The third and fourth rounds of Equations are over:

Justice League 117 points, 1st place
Fantastic Four 90 points, 3rd place

Division II
Pikachu 113 points, 1st place

Division III
Peanuts 101 points, 1st place
Yoda 97 points, 3rd place

With Clague winning all three divisions, there will be no playoff and they all will be declared State Co-Champions!!!

Equations 1st day scores

The first two rounds of Equations are complete:

The Justice League 60 points, 1st place, 15 points ahead of 2nd
Fantastic Four 39 points, 4th place, 2 points back of third

Division II
Pikachu 53 points, 1st place, 2 points ahead of 2nd

Division III
Peanuts 49 points, 2nd place, 3 points back of 1st
Yoda 45 points, 3rd place

On-Sets State Champs!!!

Equations and On-Sets playoffs concluded this evening. In the Equations playoffs,
Phineas & Ferb won their semifinal by one point while Looney Tunes lost by six points. In the final the team that had beaten Looney Tunes in the semifinal beat Phineas & Ferb for their school's first adventurous equations state title.

In the On-Sets playoffs, both Looney Tunes and Phineas & Ferb won their semifinals matches eliminating the need for a final match and both were decalred State Co-Champions.

Congratulations to the entire team for their superior mathmatical abilities.

All the division winners in addition to two wildcard teams (2nd place team with the highest scores) now advance to the state semi-finals. Looney Tunes, and Phineas & Ferb (wildcard) will be playing in seperate matches around 4:30 pm.

Online Equations

Hi,
For those of you who do not know me, my name is Maya Spivak and I am the high school coach for Ann Arbor Academic Games. This summer I am working on a project with Layman Allen, the creator of Equations and WFF, an online version of Equations. We would like to test the game with middle school students. This is an excellent opportunity to get some practice and competition in over the summer. Over the summer we will be setting up tournaments once or twice a month. The game is played online against other students. A scheduler within the program helps schedule days and times of tournaments. You don't even need to be in Ann Arbor. All you need is a computer with internet access. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would be interested in participating so that we can get some tournaments started. Exponents, Roots & Captains

Monday's practice included a review of basic exponent rules for sixth graders (worksheet) and a lesson on how to deal with negative and fractional exponents for 7th and 8th graders (worksheet). It should be noted that students in the Elementary Division (6th grade and below) are not allowed to use negative or fractional roots or exponents. Additionally the sixth graders played a practice round, learned about team scoring and began to learn variations.

After practice this year's team captains were announced. Congratulations to 8th graders Valerie, Wendy, Graham, Jiaao, and Patrick. The Friday tournament teams will be revealed on Friday, and the students will pick names for their teams.

Finally, we will have no practice next Monday, September 22. We will have practice as regularly scheduled on Friday, and have our first tournament on Saturday the 27th at Tappan.
